I just got my new centrata from Turtle Town. He is pretty typical of most baby concentrics I have seen. He has a nice bright head with some cool striping. This is my first diamondback, so please bear with me if my questions seem odd. The very first thing he did when he got into his enclosure was start eating commercial turtle pellets. I am so relieved that food will not be an issue with him. Since then he has been basking all day with his eyes closed, only occasionally opening one to move himself. Is this common? I guess I am being paranoid about infections or something. I can’t really tell if they are swollen. It doesn’t really seem like it. Another thing I have noticed is that he seems to open his mouth often, almost as if he is chewing something. He did this a lot when he first arrived but has done it less since. None of my other turtles do anything like this, so naturally I am wondering if this is typical behavior or something more sinister. Any answers you can provide would be appreciated. I would also like to thank this group for helping me prepare for the little guy’s arrival. I learned more from here than from anywhere else since there is little published literature specifically on Diamondbacks. Thanks, Jon
