In the past I have used a metal submersible heater for my DBT’s. My last one died and they are no longer available. My tanks are currently in the 70 __ 75 degree range and I want to warm them up a little. Any suggestions on a suitable heater? I am afraid to use the standard hang on the side glass heaters designed for aquariums, as the DBT’s may break them. Thanks.

In regards to using an aquarium heater in your tanks…….. You can buy an aquarium heater that is made to be used on it’s “Side” ( the Ebo-Jagar?? – However it’s spelled! This is a good one and Whisper now makes a submersible that you can also use on it’s side ) Either place it in a piece of pvc pipe that you have drilled holes in OR what I like to use is the – Plastic cross stitch canvas – It is available at Wal-Marts and craft stores like Michaels – under a dollar a sheet. I roll this around the heater securing the tube I have made with zip ties and then suction cup it to the walls of the aquarium. You can also use the black plastic hardware cloth you get at Home Depot – Lowes. I use the canvas as it comes in a sheet just the right size. You can also then cover it with a “knee high” nylon if you like. I have two very large Matamata turtles and each of their aquarium heaters I have done this with as they are great at wanting to fling their heaters around their tanks. I also cover heaters that are in baby turtle tanks as I am always afraid that they may rest on the heater and get burned? Hope this gives you a better idea on what you can do? I am sure that there are others out there that have just as good of ideas – if not better as to what works for them. I have never liked the heater covers that they sell …….. they never seem to last and hold up under the stress that some of my turtles can put on the heaters. Take care……. Have a great day! Sharon

http://www.bigalsonline.com still lists 50W and 300W titanium Via Aqua metal submersible heaters. I think there are still some other online suppliers, although not as many as a year ago – so maybe they are going out of production? Several local pet shops here still have large stocks of titanium heaters on the shelves. Another option would be to buy one of Petsmart’s internal filters with the 50W or 100W heater built into the plastic body of the filter. I have both sizes and the larger one has done a good job and held up well. I wonder if you could use just the heater capsule sold to be mounted inside the Tetratec hang-on-the side filters as they are non-glass subermsible heater units (sold seperately as an accessory). I liked Tom’s suggestions for protecting a glass heater, though. ToddDanny Amster

I have a question for all of you Diamondback owners out there. I feed my female dbt every day a few tiny pieces of shrimp. Everytime I walk into the room and she sees me she jumps along the side of the tank from excitement. She acts as though she is starving or something. Is it bad to feed her everyday? She is getting kind of fat, her fat hangs out a little by her armpits and legs. She makes me feel terrible if I don’t feed her everyday. Does anyone have advise for me? I don’t want to hurt my dbt by feeding her too much. Thanks so much. Caryn
