as you all know by now, my female db is having problems. there is only one exotic clinic in my area, and they don’t know ANYTHING about db’s. after seeing my db they can’t really tell me what is wrong with her, so they just decided to put her on antibiotics. i will tell you her syptoms and hopefully some of you may know what is going on. she definitely has shell rot, but i am treating it with this red liquid (i don’t know what it is) every night. i leave her out of water with the medication on the trouble areas for 10 hours a day. the syptom i am most concerned with is the constant blinking she does. that is what she is on antibiotics for. she scratches at her eyes and blinnks hard often. looking at her eyes, they aren’t red or swollen. her eyes look perfectly normal, but i know something must be wrong. i feed her reptomin, goldfish, and occasionally brine shrimp (frozen). she lives in brackish water. can anyone help me because the blinking is a symptom that i’ve battled for almost 6 months!! could it be the water? i’m not sure what exactly constitutes brackish. or maybe something else?? she is negative of any internal parasites.

I had a WC DBT that got a severe shell, skin and eye infection. It started with her eyes being irritated, until one day they closed and it took 4 months for her to reopen them. She went through several rounds of Baytril without any improvement. I decided to let her heal on her own and after the four months she finally recovered, but there where several encapsulated abscess left. After another strong unsuccessful round of baytril, I decided to have the abscesses cultured…. thankfully i did, cause she was infected with a nasty bacteria that was sensitive to only one antibiotic. So to resume my story 🙂 get a culture and sensitivity done on the rot on her shell. OR Do you use marine salt? If yes, do you dissolve it first before adding it to the tank? The crystals can be quite irritating to the skin and eyes if added to the tank undissolved. Hope this helps…. Julie Montreal,Quebec nikkicoco11 wrote:

i’m not sure what antibiotic the vet put her on, but they did do a culture on the shell rot. is it the same bacteria in the shell rot that bothers her eyes? her eyes appear normal, but obviously bother her. did your db’s eyes seem normal at first? that is a good point about the marine salt. i noticed that if the package of salt isn’t air-tight then it won’t dissolve correctly in the water. maybe i should let the water sit for a while before dumping it in. i hope it’s only a small problem that is causing her irritation. the only other thing i could think would contribute to her problem would be some type of deficiency manifesting itself in her eyes. — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Julie Tougas
