TALES FROM THE TH__BA͏DE: REFLECTIONS OF A TURTLEMAN DR. PETER PRITCHARD, Oxford scholar, conservationist, world traveler, and Renaissance man, is a multifaceted expert on turtles and tortoises. A cheloniological thread thus runs through his “Tales from the Thͩba__de,” as he expands the study of his favorite animals into commentaries upon the universe itself, and includes brilliant, erudite, and always humorous accounts of his adventures in many lands seeking further insight into the shelled reptiles. The book includes an extensive essay on Archie Carr, entitled “The Master Turtler, as well as essays on Dr. Pritchard’s own early turtle exploits on the Galapagos, his experiences with and several arribabas, his own leatherback sea turtle work, to his recent expedition to try to find a Pinta Island tortoise (a last try to find a possible mate for Lonesome George). The book even includes an autobiographical essay entitled “Schooldays” or “Old Masters Remembered.” Helping us all to finally know how Peter Pritchard from Belfast became Dr. Peter C. H. Pritchard, M.A., Ph.D from Florida. (A story which somehow seems to include the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.) Through out you’ll find Dr. Pritchard’s thoughts on current turtle conservation trends and possible solutions. There is also a section on why he set up his personal Thͩba__de *(a French dictionary defines this word to mean an intellectual retreat, a remote place, away from the bustle of life, where conversation, scholarship, and scientific and literary discourses are sacred), the Chelonian Research Institute, and his delight in the zany, sometimes unbelievable players of the past who launched their own Cabinets of Curiosities. A must for anyone interested in the history of turtle conservation and its status today, as well as the thoughts of one of today’s leading “turtle masters” himself.
