I went to the Midwest Reptile Breeder Expo in Indy today. I usually just go to see what breeders have. I usually walk away without buying anything. But Don Hamper, dealer/breeder, was selling hatchling northern dbacks. I bought one for $25. I thought that was pretty good. The one I bought was the only one with a white head and tear drop black marks. His shell is grey with circle markings. Here is a pic. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diamondbackterrapins/files/Turtleborn% 27s%20Pics/dbackbaby.jpg J. C.

J.C. Congrats on your new dbt. it sound like you got a very good deal on it. I looked at your other terrapins in your file. What type are they? Jonathan The Scute Moderator http://www.geocities.com/diamondbackterrapins

    — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Jonathan Helms” http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Creek/4046 Chun listed her as the male. She's on the left. The other pic there is a female I sold. What do you think they are? What about the hatchling I bought? I like your setup for your terps. I'm going to set up one similar next spring. I live in Indiana, so I bring my terps in each winter. Looks like you got a very good deal on your Hamper hatchling. Thanks for the show report! I agree with Chun that your female (on the left) has characterisitics of carolinians. It’s tough to differentiate once their original location is lost. I’ve talked to a fellow in Norfolk, Virginia, who reported that his backyard area had intergrades of carolina and northerns as well as “pure” stock of each. He said they mixed naturally and we also know that commercial shipping and impounding for the food trade circa 1900 mixed all of the subspecies in the Maryland area and likely elsewhere. J. C. I am assuming there were no other dbts at the show? Just curious. Todd in Texas “J. C.” wrote:

No, There was about ten more hathlings, more drab gray, being sold by Don Hamper. He has his own site. Look under breeders on Kingsnake. Turtle Town had two macrospilota hatchlings for $175 each. Another guy had 5 adult northerns, drab gray, and 6 carolina dbacks. The adult northerns were, I think, $75 each. The carolina dbacks were $135 for males and $200 for females. He was calling the carolina dbacks “ornate.” If you’re wondering why I didn’t buy more hatchlings, My wife would have killed me. Plus I’m spending enough time and money on the rest of my collection. J.C. I was guessing that the female and the male were M. t. centrata. But it is very hard to tell. What color is their plastron? Also I have noticed that female cetratas do have a more narrow shell. None the less they are both beautiful. You will have to post some pictures when you get your new setup completed.
