I just saw at Turtletimes.com that Richard Fife is notifying turtle people that the FDA’s four-inch regulation has finally come up for review/amendment and that a committee response is due by March 1. Go to the home page of Turtletimes for the story and links. I have been reluctant to write my representatives about this before, but Richard is making an important point that finally forcing a hearing actually opens “Pandora’s Box.” He suggests that opening the turtle regulation for discussion could actually result in the whole salmonella and reptiles issue and the issue of private reptile keeping in general coming under more scrutiny and the possible reverse effect of even more regulation as opposed to just eliminating or changing the four inch turtle regulations. I encourage all turtle keepers to at least look at the information posted on Turtletimes and at Richard Fife’s web site and consider whether or not you wish to excercise your right to write your congressional representatives (whatever your position may be) – soon! I am trusting the credibility of Tyler at his Turtletimes site. If anyone here can further elaborate on this sudden development, please let us know. Todd Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tony and Judy SimmonsFebruary 27, 2003 at 12:22 pm #18297It really isn’t a sudden development and does need to be reviewed. From a conservation standpoint, the 4″ law is extremely counterproductive because Wild Caught animals are cheaper than Captive Bred, especially 4″ CB. From a rescue point of view, I know that the more baby RES that are sold, the more we will take in. There are several major groups pushing for a ban on reptiles as pets. Among them are the HSUS and PETA. When this comes up for review, it will indeed open Pandora’s box, but if we stand up and let our voices be heard, we can make a difference. I am at this moment in the process of re-writing my letter to Congress that can be viewed at http://www.theturtleranch.com/Conglett.htm It should be ready by 11:45 AM central time. Todd StockwellFebruary 27, 2003 at 3:21 pm #18299The “sudden” part I am referring to is that Fife is reporting that it will actually finally be reviewed after years of the FDA declining his efforts to get a hearing based on their right to refuse to review any regulation if they choose to by declaring that they have other more pressing matters. Fife reports that few turtle keepers have responded to his pleas in the past – myself included. I think few of us have thought that anything would actually come of the attempts. Since you have drafted a letter, I assume that you agree the March 1 deadline is something to pay attention to if we care to register our position with elected officials? Todd Tony and Judy Simmons
Tony and Judy SimmonsFebruary 27, 2003 at 3:26 pm #18300I have had the letter up there for months, but due to the possibility of the March 1st deadline, I wanted to make sure that everyone had as good a sample letter as possible, so I revised a few things and corrected a broken link. I think that we should take action as though March 1 is indeed the deadline. Tony — Todd Stockwell
