New MD regs effective March 31st

New Maryland DNR regulations go to into effect March 31st. Terrapins will be listed under “List B” with the DNR Wildlife and Heritage, meaning you can have one without a permit. After March 31st, none of the terrapins in possession can have come from the wild in MD unless there is proof that they were acquired before March 31st, or they are grandfathered by March 31st, 2008. You can have one of each species of List B turtles without a permit, but you need a permit if you have more than one, or want to breed them. AFTER March 31, if you have not grandfathered your terrpin, you will need proof that your terrapin did not come from the wild in MD after March 31st. Breeding of legal turtles WILL be allowed with a permit and maintenance of records. Captive bred offspring may be sold, but no turtle under 4″ can be sold in MD. A permit gives DNR THE RIGHT TO INSPECT your animal-keeping area and records without notice “at resonable hours”. No proof of ownership before March 31st, 2008, or no proof of acquisition (no paperwork such as bill of sale, vet records, adoption contract, air bill, etc.) = taken from the wild in Maryland.
