I have a breeding pair of Diamond Back Terrapins that I’ve had for about 17 years. They live in a tank with brackish water and get fed in a dishpan with fresh water (keeps the crumbs out of the tank.) I didn’t realize thay had to have the fresh water until reading the previous posts. Terry lays eggs every year, about 4 clutches. She “tells” me when it’s time to go out by digging against the side of the tank, as in “Mom, I really need to get out of here!” I put her out in the tortoise yard and try to watch where she digs her nest, She’s very secretive – if she sees me watching, she won’t lay her eggs today. I incubate the eggs. Babies are fed live or frozen bring shrimp, changed over to Reptomin at a month or two old. Adults get trout chow (Purina Aquamax). There are a number of Teddy and Terry’s babies all over So California (we used to live there), some here in Albuquerque and some have gone to the East coast. I’d love to hear if any of our babies’s owners are on the list yet. There are photos of Teddy and Terry on my website: http://www.cybermesa.com/~loutrel Mimi Loutrel-Butler Albuquerque, NM

Welcome to the group Mimi! For those of you that don’t know, I think Mimi and Marvin Cornett were one of the first to have an article on diamondback care on the net. Access it at this URL: http://www.tortoise.org/archives/malaclem.html It looks like so far, we have at least 2 people that have been successful breeders: Vickie Hays and Mimi Loutrel. One other person I know that has bred them needs to take his finger off the remote control, get his butt off the couch and join!LOL There are also others out there that have successfully captive hatched gravid females. Good start. – Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@egroups.com, “Mimi Loutrel-Butler”

Hello Mimi, Remember, you sent me (3) babies from your last year’s Aug and Sept clutches? Good to hear from you again Mimi. The TeddyTerry offspring are one year old now. I posted some pics on “files” here. Some were at 3 months “BEFORE” and the other at 1 year “AFTER” was taken this morning. For their one year birthday, I put them in a 90 gallon tank. But, it must have stressed them because they stopped eating for nearly a week. They are just starting to eat a little again – but haven’t got much appetite back yet. I have been feeding them smelt. They quit eating Reptomin after tasting the smelt. They all seem to have short tails and big heads – I think that they are all females but maybe that is guessing after one year. They haven’t shown much interest in basking – I always provide a large rock stacked on two piles of bricks for them with a 50 watt zoo med lamp 12 inches away, but they don’t climp up on it (its about 90 degrees there). Maybe its too hard for them to get up there – I fashioned a wire mesh ramp to help them but they haven’t figured it out yet! Also, there is a Vitalite on during the day and I give them cuttle bone twice a week – so the shells are looking fine. I’m just hoping that they get over the stress of moving into the new tank. Glad to hear that Terry and Teddy are doing fine. Bob — In diamondbackterrapins@egroups.com, “Mimi Loutrel-Butler”
