Hi! I just bought a beautiful male diamondback terrapin now called “Chewing gum” for my son’s birthday (ok… it was for mommy too… well I’m taking care of the beast, I have to like it too!!!). He’s about 8 years old (the terp, not my son… He’s 4, for sure!) and looks happy now of his new home. For the moment I have the same tank setup that he had before but it’s a little plain… just river stones in the bottom and a plastic basking site. I’d like to add fishes and plants. What can I put if I don’t want the guy to eat everything? Well, I bought feeders today and they are all still with us! Maybe I’ll have to buy fish food soon… The under part of the shell (called plastron I think?) is changing color… It’s getting a little orange with a few small green spots. I thought about fungal infections, do you think I’m right? Can I try to treat it myself or do I have to bring my terp at the vet? Do you know a good vet in MontrÍŠal? Thanks! and please forgive me for my english… Caroline
GOURRY CHANJuly 28, 2008 at 11:44 pm #21983Hi Caroline~ I like keeping them in “plain tank” with only one cave and two basking dock. It’s really give me the feeling of a little bit plain, but I think it more easy to keep high quality of water. I got the experience that they eat every thing in the tank…even the zoomed basking dock…. For the fungi in plastron, you may try to remove them by a toothbrush. Basking may also help to prevent it spread over! Hope this info. would help and happy birthday to your son~ đ Gourry To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.comFrom: caroquinn@…Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2008 03:27:17 +0000Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] New owner with a few questions Hi! Diamondback Terrapin WorldJuly 29, 2008 at 11:13 am #21984Hi Caroline, How big is the tank? Can he easily get onto the basking area? Is he basking daily? Diamondback terrapins often will not eat fish. In most cases the fish are just a little faster than them. On a long enough time line the diamondbacks will snag them. It really just depends on the diamondback. Fungus infections are typically white. Could you post a picture of his plastron for the group?
