I am building my three babies a new home a 5m by 4m pond, 1.5 metres deep. I have provided a 0.5m by 1m centre platform for them. This will be a dry basking area. What is the best thing for them to bask on? Should I grass the area, lay a slate type substance or bark? I liked the idea of either of the first two as it wont keep entering the pond, but whatever is the best I will provide. Would they also like a marshy type area? Am I correct in thinking that I need to let some mud be at the bottom for burying in during the winter? Thanks — Victoria Concordia Crescit
Victoria, I would recommend a piece of slate or a wood log for basking. They need to dry out in the sun. If you are in the UK, how damp is it in the summer over your way and how cold does it get in the winter? If it’s damp, a grass basking area may not let them dry out. If it gets cold to the point where it freezes in the winter, I would have to differ to someone who is more of an expert on keeping turtles outside. I keep mine inside year round and I would think that if there is a freezing possibility, it would be best not to leave turtles in a shallow pond outside. – Mike — KerplunKuK
