Hi, I’m new to this group! My name is Sarah, I’m 25 years old and I just got two Terrapins, after doing about 3 months worth of research!!!! A red eared one and a yellow bellied slider. Both male. They’re 3-4 inches big. I rescued them from a man who rescues terrapins from people who let them lose or who can’t look after them any more. (He has HUNDREDS!) I just paid a small donation for them. They’re currently in a tank under 3ft but I have 3ft tanks for them to go in however, I need a bigger filter because the one I was sold is not powerful enough for terrapins! I can not wait for my new filter to arrive lol so I can put them in the bigger tank! Anyhow I just wanted to ask what water treatment you use in your terrapin tanks? At the moment I am using Aqua safe but someone said that it isn’t really any good. I can’t really find much on the internet about what I SHOULD use in the water. (I fill there tank with tap water by the way) Sarah x

Sarah Are the terrapins wild caught or captive bred? Captive terrapins can take regular water. For filters you can use any of the canister filters that are out there. They should work good for you. Who is that man that rescues the terrapins? Thanks Pete Pete Jansema Waterlandtubs 1050 W. They are not wild ones. The fella that rescues the terrapins is in Essex (UK) and he does an amazing job! =] Thanks for the advice on filter, I have one on the way lol and also 2 3 ft tanks, YAY!

Sorry, but you don’t own diamondback terrapins. You have two freshwater turtles which often are called terrapins, but are not the turtles that are the subject of this interest group. You have turtles more properly called sliders or cooters. Diamondback terrapins are all in the species “Malaclemys terrapen”, whereas your turtles are in a different genus, either Pseudemys or Trachemys (or maybe something else if the taxonomist decide new name changes are in order). Only the most general care recommendations for diamondback terrapins are appropriate for your turtles, such as filtration, tank size. Beyond that the specifics will be different and you would be mislead to apply them to your turtle.
