Hi! I’m a new terrapin owner (and turtle owner, actually). His name is Link (I’m assuming it’s a he, but I guess it’s too early to tell), and he’s a centrata hatchling that I found in the wild. We live in South Carolina, relatively close to some marshes, but our house is close to a pond with an alligator so I just had to pick him up. I looked up some information about caring for him, so I’ve got him set up rather nicely in a small freshwater tank until he gets bigger (he’s nearly two inches right now). I was wondering about something, though. Around each of the scutes on his shell there appears to be a sort of white ring. I’m not sure if this is a part of natural growth or if this is something medical that I need to pay attention to, so I figured I’d ask the experts. I’d post pictures but my digital camera is currently off with my dad in the Thousand Islands, but I can’t be too angry because he’s bringing back some nice river rocks for me to fix up Link’s tank with. Thanks for any input! -Kerri Reagan
Hi Kerri, My guess would be that it is just growth. If you could post some pictures when your dad gets back then I could tell you for sure what it is. Thanks so much! I’ll be sure to do that. — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Diamondback Terrapin World
