Hi All, I recently fell in love with these Diamondbacks…….have always loved Turtles for as long as I can remember, but haven’t gotten “serious” with this turtle thing until the last several months. I’m enough of a Turtle Freak though that my family and friends are constantly making fun of me (and my wife calls me Turtleboy), but I really don’t give a darn! Anyway, just from doing internet research/searches and listening to what some folks had to say at Austins Turtle Page, everything led me to DTW and Mr. Helms, but then when I saw the waiting list wasn’t even open yet for 2006 (at that time), I had to go to plan B (Serpents Den). I hope that isn’t a bad word in these parts!! This is going back a ways, before I knew any of you other good guys/breeders were out there……sorry! I don’t know if I got lucky or what, but this little hatchling appears to be very healthy and a pretty cute little girl to boot. Sorry to be so long winded, but there are these “bumps” or small knobs on the back of her shell that I don’t have the slightest clue as to what they are all about!!?? She is a Concentric Diamondback and the bumps really aren’t that big or noticeable, but what’s the deal with these things? Why do hatchlings have them when they are born/hatched and how long does it take for them to go away? Do they serve a purpose? Signed, Confused New Turtle Guy in Wildwood, MO

Hi Jimbo, and Welcome to the group! (that___s what everyone called my dad too). What I think you___re referring to is the Dorsal Knobs or keels on their backs. I___m not positive, but I think those knobs are there to help the turtles swim straight when they are in tide pools or estuaries and salt-water marshes where they are typically found in the wild. In most sub-species they are barely visible by sub-adults (3_+) except the Texans___I believe theirs are a little more pronounced throughout their lives. I___m sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will chime in here, but just trying to provide an educated guess as to what you were referring to. Hey Turtle Guy, Welcome to the group! I’m assuming you’re referring to the vertebral knobs on the hatchlings. These are traits of both diamondbacks and map turtles, among others. If you think the knobs on your concentric is freaky, take a look at some hatchling ornates or texans! — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “jimbo_craig”
