I have noticed what appear to be “spare tires” around the hind legs of both my juvenile dbts. “Inflatable cushions” surrounding the rear legs might be another way to describe them. I’ve also seen the same condition in some of the photos on this website. Is this natural? If not, what would be considered a sign of an impending overwieight condition?
This is an interesting one because I have found a number of my female dbts will end up with huge pouches of very loose skin around the rear legs when they are totally relaxed and basking. Then it will all disappear if they wake up and become active. However, I have seen females of all ages and sizes that had much more permanent and solid “spare tires” hanging out from the leg sockets which is definitely a sign of obesity. Can your’s still fully retract their legs into their shells? Truly obese turtles cannot get their legs retracted into the normal position. Todd rmbion
