Oxytocin

Lisa, I don’t remember the dose, I would have to refer to the vet herp book by Mader (this may not be the same dose rate as a dog or cat). It describes the amount of oxytocin to give on a weight basis for a turtle. But, when I have given oxytocin in the prescribed amount it emptied the eggs from the turtle, shelled or not. One dose was plenty. If the mass has hardened as you described, it is probably not in the oviduct anyways. And probably is not even an egg… Reguards, Scottdiamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com wrote:

Attachments : Hey Scott, I probably wouldn’t believe the large mass was eggs either but… I was watching her pretty close from the time I could feel the eggs to the time they seemed to protrude some more, more than the usual aquatic turtle. That was the first trip to the vet when we did an xray and saw the eggs. Then of course the day I noticed them moving to one side in for another xray. The xray showed the eggs had clustered and definitely had moved out of the ovaduct. Thus the bulge seemed jello like and movable almost yet I could still feel lumps inside the big bulge. The bulge became less mobile and harder. Now it is hard and won’t budge. Now I almost consider it a cyst and don’t have much hope of viable eggs. Needless to say now I’m worried about the large lump and what the next step is. The vet did give me the .4cc based on my terrapins weight when I administered the oxytocin. So now I wait, I will do another xray tomorrow as I am curious to see what the inside of the mass looks like now. But I have to believe that at one time there were eggs in her oviduct and are not now at least from what I can feel. So now I wait and see how the lump progresses. In the meantime the terrapin is happy. Thanks for caring,Lisa ——-Original Message——- From: Scott Date: 05/16/05 21:34:06 To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] Oxytocin Lisa, I don’t remember the dose, I would have to refer to the vet herp book by Mader (this may not be the same dose rate as a dog or cat). Attachments : I have used oxytocin many times for sliders and for my new guinea sideneck. The dose is 5-40IU per kg.( Mader 1996). I usually start with 20IU IC then wait an hour, if If there has been no effect I give another 10IU. Usually for a full grown DBT ( about 0.7-1kg), u woudl need much more than 0.4 cc. Sometimes when the oxytocin is innefective and u are sure that the turtle has eggs, it may be a lack of calcium because of th egg forming proceadure.Without calcium the muscle do not function properly. I will give some liquid calcium PO once a day for a few days, before starting again. And as mentioned, all eggs, wether calcified or not, will be evacuated. Julie
