Much has been said and/or assumed about terrapin prey. Periwinkles keep coming up but I have never witnessed the consumption of a periwinkle in the wild. Clearly where periwinkles are abundant terrapins are not far away. However terrapins are observed where there are no periwinkles. Has anyone ever observed terrapins eating periwinkles in the wild? If so how do terrapins eat periwinkles? How did periwinkles become terrapin prey? many thanks mw
MW, I have never seen a terrapin eat in the wild, period! I’ve seen them foraging and courting, but not eating. Have you ever seen them eat in the wild? I have had captive born terrapins eat aquarium snails. They do a good job of crushing the shell and ingesting them whole. However, the local periwinkles that I have exposed my adults to are not taken since their shells appear to be harder than those of their Atlantic and Gulf Coast counterparts.
