Hi Karen,I have seen Northerns with keels like that. They might be slightly because a grew very quickly. They don’t look like the knobs we see with the gulf coast subspecies. ThanksJonathanwww.diamondbackterrapin.com
ok, yes he did grow quickly. thank you!
Hi Karen, and Jon, Karen, your photo looks just like Asbury, with the peaked shell. Is your terrapin a male also? Here in So. Jersey most all of the females I have seen and helped rescue from the highways have a smooth rounded shell without the “bumps”. Is that typical of male and female northerns?? Asbury was hatched in the wild here, so I am pretty confident he is a native northern. For years I was worried that the ridges were something I did wrong (nutrition, calcium, basking, etc.). He has always been healthy and active so I just dismissed it as that’s the way he is. It’s good to see another northern with the same characteristics. I’m still looking for a captive bred female about 5″ to be a companion to my guy. Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks!! It’s always a pleasure. Buzz
