Pond filtering

I mainly use large cannisters (trash can size) with multiple filter pads in my 1500 gallon pond. I have to cleans the pads every week which is time consuming and messy. i am thinking of putting in a sand filter before the filter pads to capture the worst of the gunk. It could be backflushed each week a lot easier than cleaning the pads. Is anyone using a sand filter system? i am worried that turtles may produce too much hard waste and clog it up quick. If anyone can share their experience with this I would appreciate it.
