Hello all, I’m new to the group and diamondbacks in general. I spent a good portion of my youth chasing after turtles, even managed to catch a few by hand, but I’ve just recently been introduced to the dbt. I have a few questions, that I’m sure many of you will have no trouble answering. How some of you can look at a picture and ID the subspecies amazes me… Anyway, here are my questions: Does the word concentric mean the same as “light-phase”? Is normal phase and dark phase the same or are there 3 distinct color phases?? If so, does normal vs. dark vs. light apply to the skin, the shell, or both? Is the difference between the phases pretty distinct or am I just color-blind? just kidding… kinda… Does the design/pattern on the scutes have anything to do with the description? Final question, I recently aquired a hatchling that I’m told is a centrata. It’s my first dbt and he’s fantastic! More personality than I’d have ever imagined a turtle might possess. I have a few pictures in the photos section under the folder JM’s DBT. Could some of you keen eyed pros please take a peek and render your opinions??? Does he look like a centrata? Normal phase? Jeremy to me he looks just like some of my northerns. But I will let the more advanced breeders giev you a definite sub title. From what I have learned the term “dark” and “light” phase is pretty much deemed by the breeder. He hatches out say some northerns and some of their shells are ver light and some dark. Thus the lighter ones are usually more preferred and the breeder usually charges a little more for the lighter one. Usually, the lighter ones the shell pattern shows up more.A concentric is a beauty of the sub species centrata, lighter and more brilliant in color. Thats about it when it comes to my knowledge. The moderaters will chime in and help with this one. Jonathon Helms has some awesome pics of all the different subspecies if you go to his website “Diamondback Terrapin World” . I’m hoping he’ll chime in on this one. I know your little one is not a concentric. He looks so much like my northerns but I will let the centrata breeders step forth on thier knowlege and they will by days end. Good luck, aren’t terrapins the greatest!
