I just looked at my diamondback which are being cooled for hibernation. They are being kept at about 16C right now. I noticed that they seem to have some puffyness around the neck and front limbs. I noticed this previously when they where in their tank. I always wondered if its associated with being dehydrated because i keep my terrapins in a brackish water. Shoudl I worry abotu this? Will it harm them while they are hibernating? Thanks Julie

Julie, puffy skin is usually indicative of osmotic shock that can be brought about by varying salinity. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Julie Tougas

Hi Chun! I have yet to be able to purchase “smelt” at the 99 Ranch Market ~ No one knows what I’m talking about. What am I doing wrong???? I have sent other people there and they have no trouble getting it. I go to the one in Hacienda Heights. I do not find it in the frozen case and have asked if they have it in the back ~ with no luck I’m afraid. Thought maybe it goes by a different name? Also does it come cleaned or whole? Thanks for your time….Sharon “Chun-Ming Chew ” wrote:

Hi Sharon, 99 Ranch Market should have them. They are about 4-5 inch in length and it comes in whole (with the head and everything). It is in the frozen section, usually wrapped up in a styrofoam plate using clear saran wraps. Safeway (supermarket in Northern California) sometimes have them in a 1 pound bag blue bag, with no head and no guts…everything cleaned out, but cost $3.99/lb. I think smelt is the only name they are known by. Good luck, -James — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Tom & Sharon Paquette

Hmmm, it’s in the frozen sea food section in the one in Irvine. That store has 2 rows of freezers lined back to back with shrimp, crab, smelt, calamari, etc. and the smelt is always on the other end of row from the shrimp. I get it either on white styrofoam plates with saran wrap that’s packaged by the store, or in a 2lb. sealed plastic bag. It’s always frozen, whole and labeled smelt. Weird that you can’t find it there! Have you tried Sportmart or a bait shop for something similar? Happy Holidays, everyone! -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, Tom & Sharon Paquette
