I’ll try to keep this brief and apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. We’ve been raising a WC terrapin that we found wading in the Chesapeake Bay about four months ago. He/she was quarter size and is now 3 inches long. Never knew a terrapin had such a personality! Have it in a ten gallon tank w/2 largish goldfish and it’s getting too big. We have a 30 gallon tank with the same 3 fish in it for 5+ years: A large Angel fish and two smaller fish. Can we put our terrapin in this tank also? Thanks again, this is a great group of people! Hey kathleen, I dont know if the terrapin would nesacarrily be bothered by the fish- he might try and chase them once he gets bigger or just decides he would like a snack one day!- I would deffinitly get him into a larger aquarium if possible though.- I know that there are a few people in the group who succesfully keep their terrapins with fish- I think it just depends on the individual turtle.- Make sure you feed him on a regular schedule though if you do put him with the these fish.- If he hasnt bothered the goldfish then mabey he will fine with these…. Anglefish are very sesnsitve to stress I beleive so be carefull and keep a close eye on how things are going between species.-

Hi Kathleen, Actually, terrapin and fish compatibility is a controversial question – definitely not a stupid one. I would remove the angelfish for sure. At the very least, it will end up with shredded fins, if not now, later down the line. Since I don’t know what species the smaller fish are, I can’t comment on them. Most people have success keeping terrapins with larger fish like cichlids or very fast fish like zebra danios. Anything in between usually becomes breakfast, lunch or dinner. I saw my hatchlings raid the refrigerator for a late night snack once. The light to the aquarium had just turned off so the guppies were all settling down to the bottom of the tank to sleep. Normally, they are too fast for the hatchlings but in this case, the hatchlings ambushed them in the fading light and caught them off guard! -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “zacjambra”
