DBTerrapin / Forums / Diamondback Terrapins / Question on Concentrics and Ornates
My understanding is that concentric refers to a pattern in diamondbacks, and not an actual subspecies. Most of the concentrics I see for sale are centratas. Is this generally the case, or do other subspecies with the concentric rings on their carapaces often get sold as concentrics? Also, I thought Ornates were their own subspecies too. Now I see centratas being sold as Ornates. This whole thing is a bit confusing to someone trying to decide on a first diamondback. Any help to steer a bewildered turtle fiend in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jon
Hi Jon, Concentric it a term for a light phased Centrata. Northern Diamondback Terrapins also can have similar patterns but they are normally referred to as Chesapeake. Ornate (Marcospilota) is a subspecies, unfortunately some people like to call Centratas “Centrata Ornate” I can’t tell you why and I know we have asked Serpents Den not to call them Ornates but they continue to do so. I guess they think they can make more money selling them under a false description. I hope you find this helpful. I have pictures of all the subspecies on my website.
