Questions about age, eggs and behavior

Jonathan, Today I noticed a film on the surface of their indoor pond. Then I discovered the broken shell of an egg. I assume the film is associated with the released contents of that egg. Evidently her frantic behavior earlier was an attempt to leave the pond to find a place to nest. Could such a young female possibly have fertile eggs? Do they only deposit if fertilization has occurred?

Hi Dick, I am sure the film is because of the dropped eggs. It is possible for such a young female to develop eggs but most likely they were not fertile. For most females the first year they are gravid they will drop the eggs in the water. The second year they normally nest in the sand and have around 40% fertility. This is from what I have experienced over the years. I haven’t heard of many DBTs two years old actually producing hatchlings. She should however have a nesting area in-case she wants to practice laying eggs. I have seen many females dig nest even after they have dropped all their eggs.
