I’m considering buying a 50 gallon rain barrel (after the holidays, it’s over $100) to use mainly as the water to feed my 1 male diamondback.. I was wondering if anyone else has ever used this before, and if it’s safe to use considering it’s water coming out of the gutters on my roof… I was thinking it would probablly be best if I still buy a brita filter to run it through first. So I’m just wondering if anyone’s tried this yet, and if it’s safe for him and a good investment. Thanks! Amanda

I’m sure the others will have more information then me, but I would ask what area you live in. If you are in an urban area you might have to deal with pollution in the form of “acid rain” that might not be a healthy PH for the turtle. I did a little research on green architecture and one way of saving water is to use cisterns to collect rain water for use when showering or washing vehicles, or hand washing, it just has to be listed as non-potable. Of course, pretty much all turtle water is non-potable for humans so that shouldn’t be a problem for them. Other then that, I would think that many people house their terps in outdoor ponds that get plenty of rain as a supplement to however else they fill their ponds so by all means, save water and money by using what would otherwise go into the ground. I would think the brita filter wouldn’t be necessary if you have filtration with carbon, etc already going in your tank. I always remove my turtles before adding new water, usually just while feeding them, and then add some of the tetra water treatment chemical to get rid of chlorine, etc (since I am on city water). Maybe this will help. Everyone else please chime in. —– Original Message —-From: littleamanda17
