Never leave a DBT or any turtle or fish in pure distilled or deionized water for an extended period of time. Always add salt and other minerals. Instant ocean has many more solutes than just table salt (NaCl), so a cheaper salt might be ok as long as it contains the other trace minerals as well. You can use table salt but also add calcium, Mg, ect. Crushed coral, shells, Epson’s salt, dolomite, and plaster of paris (CaSO4) are all good sources of other metals, just be careful not to over-do it if you use CaSO4 or Epson’s salt. I like the coral and dolomite as it is easy, safe, and always there. -Scott diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com wrote:

So, the Instant Ocean is OK? I also have part of a calcium (cuttlebone) thing in there, like they use for birds. It is in the water. She pecks at it sometimes, so I’ve broken off some little bits for her. I was just using bay water, from where I found her, for a long time but now I’ve run out and I don’t think we’ll get back to the bay anytime soon, so I am having to find an alternative. I hope the 1 to 1 ratio of Instant Ocean to distilled water won’t hurt her. I hate to use tap water because DC has so much crap (ie lead) in their water that I won’t drink it, myself, and they are actually involved in all kinds of trouble as the water was raising lead levels in children and pregnant mothers. That’s why the distilled water. She (Shelby the turtle) has some rust colored markings on her underside and I was afraid maybe it was due to the lead in the tap water I was using right after the bay water ran out. Anyway, thank you for the info! NicoleScott
