Softshells thrive in slightly acidic or neutral pH’s. I have never seen a Softshell live more than a few months in a tank with a crushed coral substrate. The spiny softshells do best but in extreme alkaline environments I have yet to see one live more than a few months. Tap water can be hard but not like a tank with added salts and a coral or lime-based substrate. Paints, maps, and all other NA emydids and kinosternids do well in a great range of water conditions. Rick, go ahead and throw a couple spiney softshells in a tank with a coral bed and let me know in six months how they are doing. bah to you to scrooge. I wouldn’t keep any turtle with crushed coral substrate. But you can’t get much more alkaline water than what we have after going through miles of limestone aquifer. I use straight tap water for the softshells (and everything else) and NEVER have trouble with spiny softshells. I have had a hard time keeping smooths. I did have a hard time keeping Florida softshells til I provided extra heat. And I have kept softshells for years. Bah back! (Uh, oh, it’s getting ugly – :-)) -Rick Scott wrote:
