Dave, Clearification may be due on my part. I have had success with what Rick has suggested. All of the rot needs to be removed before treating it. What I was trying to suggest was more of a preventative measure. Scutes will come loose prior to shedding and tend to hold water under them. This does not allow the shell to dry out as it normally would during basking. The water under the scute stagnates and “mildews”. This rot spreads into the bone and underlying tissues. Large rocks aid in removing scutes naturally by allowing the turtle to scratch it shell on it to remove loose scutes. But periodic checks in mid to late summer and removing loose scutes with a tooth pick or similar object followed by a 10% betadine and tooth brush bath seems to be an effective preventative measure.
