Thank you for the replies regarding false nesting. I forgot to mention that this one female went through all the motions of situating each “egg” and then covered everything up as if there were a clutch of eggs left behind. I frequently see several holes which apparently became unsuitable. Sometimes I find only one egg, uncovered, presumably deposited prior to the female finding the nest site unsuitable or being scared away by a predator. Also this year I observed a female post-nesting, depositing one final egg in the water as she swam away. Two females were collected which had been killed perhaps during nesting by a raccoon, then the predator removed the oviduct through the leg. It has been suggested by my interns that a crow could also bring about such damage. What does the group think? Many thanks for thoughts and suggestions, mw
