“Call me clueless but what are mosquito fish?” Gambusia affinis. Now that would be mean, wouldn’t it? Mosquitofish are a small fish of the Poecilidae, (I think I got that right) who are related to Guppies, Mollies, Platy’s and Swordtails. This (sort of) makes them a North American Guppy. Found in any body of water, fresh to somewhat brackish in the range of DBT, and beyond. (We have them here in Western North Carolina, far from any Diamondback.) They bear live young, and breed at any time of year it is warm enough, all year in the Deep South (or in a Terrapin tank).
