The friend that gave her to me said she would have a better chance of survival if I kept her for a year, then turned her loose in the marsh (in Brigantine, NJ). My question is, will she be ok after a year in captivity? Or will she have missed out on learning some essential survival skills during that first year? I really want to turn her loose next spring if she will know what to do on her own. Thanks! Nicole Shank Nicole, I rescued Asbury from the mean streets of Ocean City NJ three years ago this week. She was about the size of a quarter. My intention was also to release her after a year. However, she became so dependent on me that after the year was up she would have had a hard time re-adjusting to the wild. She was a reluctant eater at first also, probably for a couple of weeks. I gave her small bits of fresh raw hamburger and then Reptomin sticks. She didn’t take to the sticks at first, but then started picking at them too. After she started to eat more regularlly I woud give her small pieces of fresh Bluefish, Weakfish, clams, shrimp and whatever other fresh seafood I could find. She gets the Reptomin every day. Also, pieces of fresh chicken, beef, & pork are mixed in to give her a variety. I started her in a 8″x12″x6″ Tupperware container with real beach sand and a flat stone for her to bask on. The beach sloped into about 2″ of water which I faithfully changed every day. She spent the summer this way on the back deck. I put rat-wire over the container to keep out any unwanted predators. After the summer she graduated into 40 gallon fish tank in the house, with an Aqua-clear filter, and floating cork bark for a basking area, and an aquarium heater. I keep the water at about 75-78 degrees, as this is as warm as it ever gets around here. The tank is kept about 2/3 full. A sun lamp is a critical necessity if keeping them inside. I use a “capture the sun ” bulb which is a full spectrum lamp ideal for reptiles. I added Kosher salt to give the water a little brackish flavor and act as a tonic. Now the water is totally fresh. She is now about 4″-41/2″ in diameter and doing quite well. I wish you well on your new found friend. If I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to ask.
