Sorry to suggest this so late, but IMHO the best substrate is 1 to 1.5 inch river rock layered maybe 2 thick at the most. It is natural, large enough so they don’t ingest it, allows them to dig and wear their claws, and is EASY to clean between. Sometimes all it takes is to move it with your fingers and “fan” the bottom with you hand to dislodge debris for your filter to get or for the fish to eat. If you got the crushed coral at Petsmart or Petco, I’d suggest scooping it all out, putting it all in a bag and returning it to them saying it clouded up your water real bad. They give you your money back pretty much no questions asked at those places. All you have to be is “unsatisfied”. They want to keep your business AWAY from the other major competitor. You can get the river rock at any nursery, garden center, or ornamental rock place. It’s very cheap and BEAUTIFUL (lots of colors) when rinsed. Just dump some in a 5 gallon bucket and blast it with a garden hose, with the bucket at an angle so the water rinses out. Shake it while hosing. Then, leave a little clean water in the bucket and take the bucket to the aquarium. That allows you a final rinse when you take it out BY HAND and drop GENTLY on the bottom of the tank. DON’T dump the bucket into the tank unless you want to crack the bottom glass! At the end it will be a little cloudy, but that will go away after a few days once it settles and gets filtered. It won’t harm the turtles! Good luck! I got a Penguin model 550 that circulates only 145 gal per hour but I saw it shoving particles toward the fluval earlier. Now, I got the crushed coral that was suggested and I rinsed it til I was blue in the face and still when I dumped it in there it looks like milk. I took the turtles out because it cant be good for them. Will the filters clear up the milky appearance? Or should I start changing water AGAIN. Thanks, Carole
ReptileszzMarch 24, 2002 at 1:57 pm #16895Are you serious? There is no way I am taking 40 pounds of coral out of this tank and lugging it back to Petco No way. There has to be a way to clean it. How do all the people using coral wash it? Carole PS is it ruining my filter as we speak?
Glaeser Walt-P55431March 24, 2002 at 2:03 pm #16896I’m assuming it’d be like the river rock. The dust has to settle or be filtered. There’s really nothing you can do to speed up that process but wait. I don’t have any specific experience with crushed coral. It’s up to you if you keep it or not. I just think all the fine particles would trap waste more and be more difficult to clean. Do you have an Undergravel Filter? ReptileszzMarch 24, 2002 at 2:07 pm #16897Hi, as long as it wont hurt the filter I am just going to leave it there and wait it out. I assume at some point it will come out. Altho it occurs to me that the media in the fluval may not be too helpful here as it has the spongy stuff that traps big stuff, the bags of carbon, bags of ammonia remover (that I dont think I need but I bought and am using just to use them up), and the bio ball thingys. There is nothing to really trap the very fine stuff I fear. hmmmm, I guess we wait and see. I dont have an ugf. I have the fluval 404 cannister that has served me well for the last 3 months or so. Glaeser Walt-P55431March 24, 2002 at 2:10 pm #16898If you rinsed it really well, I don’t think anything left would damage the filter. I have a Rena Filstar XP-3 which is similar to the Fluval, but it has different media, I guess. I have 2 large cel foams for the big stuff, 2 small cell foams for most of the rest, and a micro foam pad for the really fine stuff. And let me tell you THAT one gets the most filthy! I also have the fluval ceramic rings in there as well as a carbon bag and a nitrate bag. You’d wonder how the water ever gets through!!! It should come out good enough to drink, like Brita water!!! chris brattonMarch 24, 2002 at 8:15 pm #16899hello, i use crushed coral in my terrapin tank and i have no problems at all with it. yes it does make the water milky, but it goes away after 12 hrs. hopefully you got a large grade so they wont try to eat it. and as for the filter it will not hurt it, i use biowhisper 3’s in all of my tanks, the fluval i had, did not do a very good job, the water stayed fresh smelling, but it did not stay clear. also all of dbt’s got bacterial infections on their skin. — Glaeser Walt-P55431
http://movies.yahoo.com/ ReptileszzMarch 24, 2002 at 8:40 pm #16900Hi everyone, by now you all know that I dumped in a BUNCH of not-rinsed-well-enough crushed coral into my DB tank today. I let the fluval 404 filter it for awhile but realized that the holes in the foam filter are too big to get the small particles making my tank look like milk. I went and replaced the foam with a bunch of the filter floss stuff. That seems to be working better. But tomorrow morning I think I will have to replace that or at least rinse it out. The DB’s are in their old tank with no filtration at the moment but they seem happy go lucky enough to me. I think tomorrow I will also be vacuuming out some of the white water. Thanks for the advice Carole
ReptileszzMarch 24, 2002 at 8:44 pm #16901Hi, which fluval were you using? I have the cannister 404. They have several kinds. And my water was nice and clear and not smelly at all right up until this last little snafu. Carole
