I was wondering what Ph people were targeting in their tanks/ponds, if any. My setups usually run about 7.8 which seems high. I get frequent shell infections although my water tests for no ammonia and is salted. I am wondering if a lower ph would help this problem.
Jason WilliamsonNovember 21, 2001 at 6:00 pm #16307I have heard that an acidic pH is better for turtles in general as far fungal and bacterial infections go. One thing I know is that hard water is nearly impossible to bring an acid level. The minerals and or salts dissolved in the water will constantly keep buffering the pH to a higher more basic level. My tap water is rather hard. I have not been able to use commercial pH lowering products successfully. It always went to a higher pH value no matter how much I would add. Yet, softer water is easy to adjust the pH. I know that peat softens water naturally and acidifies. So, for my freshwater pond I used a mesh bag filled with peat in the filter and eventually the water acidified. I have a question, do y’all think that adding salts to the water to create a brackish environment hardens the water so that it can’t be acidified? thanks, Jason — emneil@… wrote: __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If its Rock salt used for pickling than i don’t think it will. But I might be wrong. But DBT need a hard and alcaline water. I have a female that was covered with shell rot when I got her. I had tried many treatments while she was being housed in water and rock salt. I started using marine salt mixture and she started healing much faster and without the need of suplemental treatments. Now i always use marine salt. Julie Julie Jason Williamson wrote:
