Red Ear Slider and Terrapin

Hey, I have a diamondback terrapin. One of my relatives knows this and decided to surprise me with another turtle. However, it’s a red ear slider and I’m not sure is it safe to put the two together. My DBT is approx 1.5 bigger than the Red Ear Slider. He/She (how can I tell? Is it the claw?) sniffed at it and looks like it was going to bite the Red Ear Slider. Should I put the two together? Is there a way to train the DBT to be nice? Right now, I’m putting them in seperate places, just in case.
The slider is probably going to be more aggressive than your terrapin. We have had one male terrapin in with about 6 sliders (3f, 3m) and had to recently take him out because one of them bit his foot. He is recovering fine and I don’t think turtles usually will attack each other purposely, but when there is food present the sliders get very aggressive. (And we feed them all the time.. they’re just really aggressive with food.) michelle — grndtrn
Attachments :I had that combo together in a 40 gallon breeder tank for about a year or so. No problems. In fact, they mated … a LOT. One reason I got rid of the rapidly growing slider!
Hi all- I don’t own any turtles as pets, I’m actually a biology student (I’m currently between my undergrad and graduate school). I’ve done some conservation work with terrapins, hence my interest in the group. It’s been interesting to hear everyone’s comments and fun to learn more about terrapins and turtles in a different sort of way. Anyway, here’s my question/concern about having DBTs and sliders together…since DBTs are estuarine and sliders are freshwater, how can you have them in the same tank together? I’ve seen terrapins that lived for prolonged periods in freshwater tanks and it caused their carapace to be pitted and scarred and their overall health was also affected. Just thought that I would throw that out there… Also, if anyone has questions about terrapins in the wild, feel free ask, I’ll do the best that I can. Last I heard from my friends who work with DBTs up in NJ, the nesting season hasn’t started yet. I don’t know about elsewhere in the range but I imagine they’ve started down south and should be starting soon up north. -Christina
