Rescued baby diamondbacks in Jersey

My kids found a cement basement well under our condo rental in Jersey. it had numerous dead creatures in it which had fallen from the sand ledge above, and there were 7 tiny turtles, each smaller than a 50-cent piece. they looked dry and we thought they were dead, but some were barely moving, so we put them in water and all of them started swimming around. We were going to release them but the kids were upset that they’d be eaten so we brought them home to PA yesterday. I spent the whole day researching and found that they are diamondback terrapins. I attempted to contact many people and was able to reach a conservation group who will be taking our turtles to the Wildlife Institute in Jersey. They have a head-start program where they will raise them to 4 inches, then release them. I used to live on the Chesapeake and thought we could take them to MD, but they said it was best for them to go to their original home. I have learned a lot about these amazing animals today and find them beautiful and remarkable. KUDOS to all of you who are dedicated to saving them!

Imgasdaska Thank you for alerting us to yet another hazard for terrapins. I had found frogs in window wells, but it had not occurred to me that turtles would end up in these as well. Thanks again for the update. Good luck! mw
