Dear Chun and Friends Jeff’s account is one of the most moving stories I have read. I recall his call to me the next morning and how elated he was that his hatchling had pulled through. What a gem of a teenager! My technique which I learned from a waterman (term for fisherman on the Chesapeake) who has recovered hundreds of terrapin does not include any type of pressure to the animal. It involves draining the lungs by tilting the animal head down. Leave the animal in this position in a cool place. I have heard that it takes a terrapin up to six hours for the heart to stop completely, that is when the metabolism is full tilt. I know this to be true with those we have had to euthanize. It is a very sad twist of biology that their death can take so long, but it also allows for some recovery. I am afraid I am not an expert, but this has been the case with my limited experience. mw “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” “he who knows best knows how little he knows.”
