Hi. I have a DBT that is approximately 5 months old. Harvey was captured from the wild and is doing well in captivity. He is currently 2 inches wide and 3 inches long. I have been doing some research on sexing DBT’s and I think I have concluded that Harvey is actually a she… I was wondering what is the best techniqie to determine the sex of a DBT. I only have one turtle so am unable to compare tail length or head size.
The tail will be your first clue. You can probably just give it a month or two of growing on a healty diet and the sex should be clear. Or post a couple of picts of the posterior and someone may can help you now. Harvey looks sharp! BBM
Hi, cloacal popping isn’t usually practised with chelonia so I’m not sure if there’s any other technique other than observing the length of the anal port from the base of the tail. Unfortunately, any speculation at 3″ may be just that, speculation, since sexual dimorphism isn’t usually evident until the terrapin reaches at least 3.5″ in shell length. So keep looking, and your suspicions may be confirmed soon. Until then, may I suggest Hilary? ๐ Chun Tail Moderator
