hello, i have 4 mississippi map turtles that are in excellent health *touch wood* however, the oldest one who is 13 months old is developing a tiny bit of rotting on her shell. she shows normal behaviour and is very active and healthy, but the white-ish discolouring on her shell has left me a little worried. it’s a tiny blob smaller than half cm squared, but i don’t want it to spread and get worse. are there any solutions or liquids i could use to resolve this? they have constant access to warm water, a UV repto light and a warm basking area. it’s only these last few days i have seen this develop on my eldest. any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. thank you. Devi.

HI Devi So this is what I would do if I were you… Take the turtle out of the water and set up a dry tank that you can keep her in for a few days. — You will need to scrap all of the “rot” out of the shell. Its important that you get all the rotten part out as if you dont it can get worse I believe.- The rotten part should come off pretty easily just softly rub or lightly scrape until you get to the grayish harder area and you should have gotton all the rot out.- Keep her dry docked with a basking light in one area of the tank for about 22-23 hours a day. Its really important that the spot gets totally dried out to prevent furthur problems.- I dont think it would hurt to clean the area with some type of antibacterial cleaner (Betadine) I even did salt bathes for about 15 mins a day when I have delt with this. The number of days to dry dock her I would say is roughly 4-5 days I think. Please someone correct me if I am wrong— Good luck – Im not an expert by any means but I’m pretty sure this is generally the way to deal with this Mabey some others will have more advise for you!! — Heather — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “missdiamondji”
