Hello DBT lovers….. I need an urgent help right now…. Could somebody help me to cure my DBT, Tips & suggestion would be appreciated….. My DBT have decline eating for 2 weeks….. He spends his time with basking all the time I take him to the veterinarian, he was injected with antibiotic and vitamin. The doctor gave me a prescription, its kinds of powder that put inside in a capsules. The medicine should be opened and mix into a warm water with the turtle inside. Till now there is no progress about the appetite from the turtle and he still decline to eat. I found the symptoms of swollen eyes, white mucus dripping nose or mouth, listlessness, and off feed. So I replaced the turtle in a smaller enclosure with temperature about 30 C, floodlight with an exotera 26 watt Repti Glo 10.0 + 60 watt sun Glo neodymium and every morning I sunbath and soaking the turtle for 20-30 minutes. Even yesterday I was force feed the turtle with shrimp but the turtle only swallow a small piece of shrimp. its very hard to force him to feed. My question are: 1. Whats wrong with my DBT? 2. Is there anything else I can do for my lovely Turtle, I love him very much??? 3. Is there any medicines or pruducts that I should give for my turtle??? Please tell me more how to cure him??? Previously, I’m so sorry to bother with many questions, I hope anyone could help me, I’m kind of frustrated …..
karen testaAugust 3, 2009 at 9:26 am #22571Hello, i am so sorry to hear of your friend. first i would you be able to give more specifics on him/her. age, how long have you cared for it, and is it in brackish water and what is the setup like? in the meantime it seems as though it has a respitory infection/vitamin deficiency. for precautionary measures i would up the water temperature to 30C and basking (which he should be able to do so at his own free will as often as he chooses) 35C. is he able to dry off completely on the basking site you offer? is there any drafts in the room like a fan or air conditioner? this would not be good as the ambient temperatures should be kept up also.(27C) please have a good thermometer to check these temperatures often as they do change daily due to evaporation and outdoor temperatures. i would also keep a heat emitter on 24 hrs a day, preferably on the basking dock so he can heat himself up at night if needed. you have to build the immune system to help it heal itself. what is the diet like? do you offer vitamins or cuttlebone for calcium supplementation? when you say shrimp, do you mean the freeze dried kind? i would offer some fresh food at this point just to get the eatting back. keep the stress down and water very clean(do you test/do water changes often as should?) offer some raw wild caught salmon fish cut in small bite sized pieces. or a wiggley red worm, to get his attention. i would not force feed an animal as they can go sometime without food. how long has it been? i understand your frustration and that is why we have to diligently keep our husbandry up to par with these little guys. i hope i helped a bit. i would call the vet and ask him why the meds arent working(is he injesting them when you put them in the water?) do not waste any time as they go down quickly.
beautifuljoe1313August 4, 2009 at 2:27 pm #22572If it were my turtle, I’d get him on injectable antibiotics. Depending on what type of antibiotic, they are often given every other day or once every three days in alternating front legs. Oral meds for aquatic turtles rarely work unless you really, really know what you’re doing and can force feed fluids (most keepers can’t). Usually you need a very small syringe (no needle) or a ball-tipped cannula to force feed an aquatic turtle. Katrina
