Has anyone else seen the news about the officials confiscating turtles under four inches at the last Streamwood, IL, reptile show? There are some reports and discussion showing up on the Kingsnake turtle forum. There is at least one link there to a newspaper article describing the state and federal authorities actions at the show. This is really serious! ToddDo you Yahoo!? Yahoo! News – Today’s headlines
daySeptember 18, 2002 at 6:03 pm #17752ok ok its been awhile but check this out….. i was talking to a lady i work with, she fishes ALL the time…… i asked her if she ever saw turtles she said “yes” i asked if she ever saw terrapins (mind you i live in San Marcos Texas about 30 miles south of Austin) she said yes she did. I was sooooo surpassed. I said this far north she said yes I told her generally they live closer to the coast and what not. she explain to me the terrapins she had seen and sure enough she is seeing terrapins in San Macros Texas. anybody ever heard of terrapins this far north? and this far from brackish or salt water, naturally?

Todd StockwellSeptember 19, 2002 at 10:47 am #17756Just by reading the one newspaper account and the discussions on Kingsnake, this definitely brings all sales of turtles under four inches into question. The reports indicate federal officials assisted the Illinois officials. If that is true, it could be the beginning of renewed enforcement nationally by the USDA of the controversial four inch law. The main question remains what is the line between selling commercially and private sales for education, research and exhibition by non-commercial breeders. Just look at the forums to see this old chestnut heating up to blast furnance proportions again! It will be interesting to see what happens with the NARBC show next weekend in Tinley Park Illinois. The Streamwood bust included finding a venemous rattlesnake under a vendor’s table and citing another vendor for not having the proper license to sell bearded dragons. There was a lot of stuff going on in this Illinois action that raises many questions for herpers. Todd blueshift1229 wrote:
