Dear All, Thank you for your reply. here is additional information: My DB turtle is about two years old My River cooter is 1 1/2 but double the size of my DB She used to eat small shrimp, and currently we try “wide caught” smelt filet again she start eating it. We try to feed every night. She does not eat a whole lot She won’t eat any commercial food, blood worm (dry or live), vegetable After Vet visit in May, we start to bath her 1 to 2 hours a day in calcium powder that the vet recommend to dip with food. She won’t each the food which dip in the caclium. Swollen is soft and feel more like a ballon. It has been developing since early Sept about 1 1/2 month to 2 months. It is on both legs and small bubble at front armpit. She eat little and bask most of the day even before the antibotics. She rarely go into the water. We have been using Baytril for over 7 days now, the swollen still remains and she seems to be afriad of us or the shot: She turned away when we feed. Kieth from the group suggests that it might be Edema. Please advice if there is treatment. I have enclosed additional photos. I housed it in a 40gal critter tank for both turtles with full filtration. I have UV hook and infared light for warmth at night. I am turning the UV on at least 6-8 hours per day. Again, thank for all the reply and it would be wholeheartedly appreciated in you could provide comment and answer of its illness and diet. Thanks again. http://pets.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/diamondbackterrapins/photos/browse/a0b0 Stephen Kam
Stephen ChewOctober 26, 2007 at 8:19 pm #25347Hi Stephen, It looks like your terrapin is suffering from the effects of a poor environment and diet. It does have edema and shell rot. The edema could possibly be caused by thiamine (Vit. B1) deficiency from eating an exclusively raw fish diet. Or it could be symptoms of a more sinister internal problem related to lung or kidney functions. I suspect that it is basking a lot due to the shell problems. Honestly, the tank is too small for both your terrapin and river cooter. I’m not sure what type of filter you have hooked up but it may also be inadequate. Your best bet at this point is to provide it with a bigger tank and feed it a nutritional diet such as Mazuri Aquatic Turtle Diet. You could try stuffing it into the fish and slowly weaning it off the fish. The edema will need to be looked at by a qualified veterinarian. Consult http://arav.org for a qualified vet in your area. Let us know where you live if you have difficulty locating one and perhaps someone might know of a good vet in your area. All the best. -Stephen C — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “kamstephen”

The shell shape and overall physical condition indicate diet and environmental problems. The animal does look like it may be suffering from MBD. You do need to find a veterinarian that may be able to give you a better evaluation of the animal. At this point I am not sure exactly what the Baytril may or may be doing for the turtle. Hopefully he is not suffering from kidney or Liver disease as the prognosis could be grim. On the other hand a few adjustments in diet and environment could possibly turn this animal around. The problem is you need to find a qualified vet to evaluate him. Good luck and please do keep us posted on his progress Steve
