I have a Chesapeake hatchling that has swollen puffy and closed eyes. I believe its due to a vitamin deficiency from his poor eating habits. He never became acclimated to eating Jumbomin like my other hatchlings and would only eat live food. Unfortunately I have been feeding him just mealworms for the last few weeks and noticed yesterday his eyes were swollen and closed. I managed to feed him some guppies last night and have been applying Turtle eye drops containing Vitamin A on his eyes. Today he has not improved and did not eat. I bought some Vitamin A and tried to apply it to a fish and feed it to him. Unfortunately he did not eat today. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the problem and what they did for it. rcftx
Hello there. My first DB went through a round of this. It’s caused by a deficiency in Vit C, not A. You need to take the hatchling to a vet ASAP in order that they may adminster vitamin shots. The shots cost me about $20 a piece, and my turtle need somewhere between 4-6, I don’t recall exactly. It shouldn’t cost anymore than $10 per shot for a hatchling, and nowadays.. After he’s gottena few shots the eyes should start opening. At that point you can start working on the diet.
