She could have been already sick at the pet store. Most turtles wont let you know that they are ill until they are about to die. The fact that there was swelling could indicate that there was an internal infection or bleeding. The stress of the move could have caused the illness to accelerate. Julie Montreal tyestixx wrote:

I’m very sorry for your loss. I know it doesn’t take us long to become attached to our “babies”. Any reputable store would give you your money back or replace the animal after only 4 days. If not, mention the Better Business Bureau… Walt G. —–Original Message—– From: tyestixx [mailto:tye@…] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 11:58 AM To: diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com Subject: [diamondbackterrapins] taking DBT back i have kept yoda overnight so that i can take her back to the pet store after work today. kinda creepy but i put a sheet over her tank. they were closed yesterday for the holiday, so i’m gonna take her down there after work and ask for my money back. this is stupid. if they don’t give me my money back i’ll be even more pissed. i only had her 4 days. she was fine yesterday morning when i left for work. i don’t get it. so we’ll see what happens. poor lil thing. i did everything i was supposed to…i don’t know why she died. i guess shit happens huh? tye To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: diamondbackterrapins-unsubscribe@egroups.com Your use of Yahoo! Sorry to hear about the DB..it always hurts to see a precious turtle pass away. If I were you take it back to the pet store. If it is a decent pet store they should give your money back or a new DB. I use to work for a pet store several years ago and we had a 2 week policy for pets except fish which where 2-3 days since people did horrible things to them like leave them in the car in August. Anyway, if they don’t take it back, take the store to state authorities to check into health conditions. I don’t want to sound too critical of pet stores..okay I will, since I’ve seen so many poorly run ones. Many pet stores get their animals from these large distributors (god knows where they get them from and don’t want to know) and they are handed down to local pet stores in many times horrible conditions. I don’t know how many ticks I had to pull off snakes, force feed half-dead lizards, or deal with various wounds and other inflictions. I felt like more of a vet than a pet store worker. Even some of the trade shows were no better. I recused a Greek Tortoise and a Bellhingeback which both had bad cases of worms. Of course this doesn’t apply to every pet store and there are a few really good ones who treat the animals well and know their stuff, but for the most part the pet industry treats animals like inventory to be moved with little regard to real care. I personally would stick with personal breeders for a new DB even if you have to wait and pay a little more. — tyestixx http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/
