Hi, I have a friend who is offering me a great deal to get a nice big 225- gallon Tank for my terps. I have three northern males about a year old and will be looking perhaps soon for some female companionship, (so if you are selling or know someone who may be selling female adult northerns, please let me know…) but have some concerns in how to set up a tank of that magnitude. I have a 75-gallon tank right now with the 3 terps and a myriad of fish that I think I finally gotten into a good system of water and filter media changes to make things painless, provided I keep on top of it. I know, however, that with a tank that big, filtration and water movement is going to be more of an issue. Are there any suggestions you might make regarding setup for a tank of that size with potentially 5 to 6 terrapins and a few select fish? In particular I would like some help recommending how much and what kind of filtration to get. Somehow I can’t imagine basic aquaclear hang on filtration being adequate for 225 gallons. Fortunately, I’m not going to be getting things immediately if at all, since I need to weigh the cost of an adequate setup into the decision, and I want to avoid doing major waterchanges with that much water, so I’m willing to spend to get whatever’s necessary. Again, any help would be appreciated. Apshai
Stephen ChewJune 4, 2004 at 1:21 pm #19714Hi Apshai, You will be limited to sump-type wet-dry trickle filters with a tank that size, so you will be looking at a major investment. The filter and pump will cost more than your tank. You will want at least a 5x turnover rate for your pump when you go shopping. There’s no way hang on the back power filters will do an adequate job on a tank that size; doubtful as well for canister filters. Good luck. -Chun — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “apshaiterp”

Lisa A LeeJune 4, 2004 at 2:23 pm #19716I have a 200 and a 500(guessing I’ve had the tanks so long I can’t remember actual gallons, but there huge), just getting prepared for winter. I invested in what I would call a pond filter and pump and to be truthful it looks like it will work great. Because I was able to place the inlet/outlet hoses from the filter anywhere I wanted. This is probably a cheaper way of doing it but even though I haven’t moved my turtles in mine yet, I like it. I even have the fountain unit option on the pump and it’s kind of neat. I got the fishmate brand pump and filter from ebay brand new from ebaysellersworld store. Total set up was only $200 and I got enough power for 2000 gallons. Hey it’s working, so I’m thrilled. I will need to get a couple ebo jagers then I’m set. You’ll need lighting and basking/breeding area’s so you will have to add that in the equasion.Good luck, Lisa — In diamondbackterrapins@yahoogroups.com, “apshaiterp”
Nicole ShankJune 4, 2004 at 2:57 pm #19717Hi all, I am wondering if terripins ever molt or shed skin . . . my baby Shelby seems to have some sheer/white skin looking stuff on her neck/legs while swimming, but I don’t notice it when she’s out of the water. She doesn’t seem sick at all and is very lively and eating well. Her swimming area could be cleaner – I am going out to buy a filter this weekend but so far she has just had a very small swimming area that I’ve been cleaning out by hand every day. Thanks for any info, NicoleStephen Chew
