Hi. Catfish do not have stingers around the mouth, but do have pectoral spines (analogous to the front legs of terps) and dorsal (on the back) spines. The spines can be locked in place, and some species have truly wicked barbs on them. They are used to repel predators. Only a few species (Stonecats in the US) have venom sacs associated with the pectoral spines, but at any rate, any of them can hurt when handled carelessly. I don’t know if they would hurt a terp if left alone, but I feel strongly that id the terp tried to eat it, there might be trouble…..(and we know terps love a fish dinner)! i had put a channel cat in with a db and the channel cat did eat at the rear end of soft flesh on the db and it did die of injuries due to the catfish so be careful what kind of cat you put with the db . they were both in a tank at the time
The catfish in the Gulf of Mexico are especially dangerous. Those catfish have a whitish rigid horizontal spine on each side of the head that is about 3 inches long, has a substantial diameter, and has a sharp point. I am told that those spines can easily pierce right through a hand or through your sneaker into your foot. Bob — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Alex Netherton”
