Need advice on swollen eyes. I have a batch of hatchlings, 5 weeks, which have developed eye problems. Not all appear to have the problem, Please advise. M Whilden

Once my DBTs were swimming with their eye lids shut and rubbing their eyes. I wasn’t sure if it was respiratory infection, Vitamin A deficiency, or a salinity problem. I decided to try turtle Vitamin A drops in their eyes as a first step before going to a Vet. I also spiked their cuttle bone with the drops and I raised the water temp to 84 to help their immune system. Within a couple of days the symptoms disappeared. If it is a respiratory infection the turtle may also exhibit wheasing noises. There are lots of care sheets on the web for turtle eye problems. Here’s one for red eared sliders that you might find helpful: http://reslider.free.fr//sickness.html A word of caution, if you try the Vitamin A drops, note that too much Vitamin A is toxic to the turtle. So, don’t overdo it. Also, you can take the turtle to your Vet and he/she can give the turtle a vitamin shot. Good Luck, Bob — In diamondbackterrapins@egroups.com, “Terrapin Station at USNA/GP”
