I took him to the vet along with my new wood turle. The wood turtle has fluid in his left lung and Tex has some form of shell rot. The vet is treating them both with Baytril (I think that’s what it’s called). She says the wood probably won’t make it, but Tex is doing great. He’s a little pudgy though. :- Better than too skinny I guess. They all love Tex at the office. They all think he’s so cute and really pretty too! ๐ ~Candace~

I don’t know how far down the wood is, but I have occasionally brought turtles back from being completely limp from pneumonia. Just keep the wood turlte warm (82F+/-). The Baytril is great for the bacterial infections and would be excellent for preventing any secondary bacterial infection in Tex. But the fungus will probably need to be removed every couple days until new shell growth prevents it from returning. A regular soak after the fungus is removed will help. You may want to increase the salinity of your housing water if you have not already. If you do not want to soak him then treat the local area with a more concentrated form of betadine, nolvasan, acriflavine, malachite green, methylene blue or other anti-fungal or anti-infective. Just allow the area to dry before returning him to the water. Good luck, Scott — In diamondbackterrapins@y…, “Candace”

Scott, How do I remove the fungus? I don’t know if I read it on this list or another one, but I thought that if it doesn’t come off when you gently pick at it, then it should only be removed when the turtle is under anesthesia. It will hurt them a lot and pull off their scutes I think. The vet doesn’t know much about turtles that I’m taking them to. This really makes me nervous. She was using some tool trying to scratch off the fungus. Tex started flailing his arms about and hissing like crazy so she stoped. After I finish getting his shots, I’ll never go back there. So I can’t pick off the fungus and when I called pet stores, nobody had Nolvasan for sale. I’m supposed to soak him in that, right? The vet has it in perscription form but I think she said he didn’t need it. I’m really confused. :- ~Candace~
