I’m looking for the best incandescent light for my clip lamp, that will offer basking heat and the right UVA/UVB rays for my babies. Is there such a thing? Money is no object in this case. (Don’t want pyramiding scutes, as per Chun!) Donna (and the three hatchlings)
uniqueturtlesSeptember 10, 2002 at 8:18 pm #17717Hi Donna, Yes, there is such thing. I am currently using T-Rex Active UV Heat Bulbs. It provides both UVA and UVB rays. Retail price in stores is about $79.99, but go to http://www.petwarehouse.com to get them!!! They sell for $44.99 only!! They only come in 100Watt, 150Watt, and 275Watt (Spot or Flood). I would recommend 100Watt Flood because you can put the lamp much closer to the turtles, minimum 6 inches away though. For the 100Watt spot, mininum is 18 inches, which doesn’t provide much heat at that distance. 100 Watt spot focuses the rays in one spot(I think the UVB rays, but not the heat). I use them in most of my tanks. You can see a pic on my website at http://www.geocities.com/uniqueturtles. Go to tank setups and you can see it on the first two pics. Also, the clamp light fixture I use can support up to 150 Watts!!! Not many fixtures can do that. So make sure your clamp fixture can support at leat 100Watts. I have heard of another type called Sun mercury vapor bulbs (something like that). I don’t know how it compares to T-Rex Active UV Heat, but I know it provides UVA/UVB also, and believe it’s cheaper. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on these two types of bulbs? -James
