Last night a big long thing came out of my three-year old terrapin’s hiney. It was half as long as her body, and ended in a funnel shape, or like a flower that opened and closed. It was pretty horrific, but after a while it went back in, and today there is no sign of it. Is this something sexual? Or a prolapsed rectum, maybe? I’m having nightmares about it. Should I be concerned? Donna, in Chicago

Hi Donna, Congratulation, it’s a boy! This is perfectly normal. Some male especially ones by their self will do this from time to time. Don’t ask me what they are achieving with doing this. I would tell you my guess but this is a family group. Good Luck Jonathan Lisa Lee

A boy? But her name is Mystique – needs a change, I guess. Are you guys sure, though? On the one hand, it was very long (congradulations to Mystique!), but it had a floppy end like a flower, or a funnel – didn’t look like a masculine part. I know absolutely nothing about turtle love. Yes, I am sure Mystique is a boy. You can read the mating wright up I have on my website under the Breeding section. I describe what male parts look like when they are not tucked away. Thanks Jonathan http://www.diamondbackterrapin.com mckay07
