I’ve been getting very frustrated lately. My yearlings, 7 in all now are in need of a bigger setup. I have a 400 gallon tank that we are trying to set up for them. I’m not good with dividers or docks. We have an enclosure similar to jonathon H for my two breeders. But really wanted to use the tank for these guys since their so fun to watch and enjoy in the house. Cork yes would be the answer for them to float on and bask but I tell you I have boiled it over and over again and my water still looks like tea, am I giving up too quick on the cork. I just wanted an inexpensive and not too heavy of a way to add a basking area. I have some riverwood, but it’s just not the right shape for 7 to bask on. Help, Lisa

I have used bleach to get all the stain out. Submerge the cork in strong bleach water under a few bricks for a day. Then let it dry out completely for a week in the sun. All chlorine should vaporize in that time mw Marguerite WhildenTerrapin Institute http://www.terrapininstitute.orgP. O. Hi Lisa, I feel for you I have been using the same cork for several years and they don’t bleed any more but it did take several months to get the color out. I use to leave them out in the sun for a couple of days and then return them to the water. No one had told be about boiling them back then. Marguerite’s bleach idea sounds like another option. Thanks for the help guys, I would just like to see my turtles in the tank they are so beautiful. I know acrylic panes and so forth can be made but I want to save my dollars for hatchling season. Cork is just such an inexpensive way for basking. I have driftwood but thats not cutting it. They grow up so fast that the big stock tubs are almost a necessity later but not quite as attractive or fun. I do have a set up almost identical to yours jonathon for my pair of ornate breeders. Tanks are just so beautiful. Oh for all the calcium questions people have, I have raised quatic turtles for over twenty years, just not terrapins until recently. But I use an occasional calcium block and any product made by caribsea for their substrate and my turtles thrive.
