I have two 50 pounds bags of Aquamax currently on hand that we are feeding so I’ll pass on what we have found out so far. Rick Van Dyke recommended a feed store in Austin, Texas, where we special ordered ours. It took about a month for them to get it in and they had been out for several months, so there can some delays in finding it. We paid about $27.00 for a 50 lb bag. Rick – below is what was on the bags Tomlinsons sold us. Is it the same as you use? Aquamax Grower 500 Protein 41% Fat 12.0% Fiber 4.0% Calcium 1.6% min Phosphorous 1.1% Sodium .4% Purina is now apparently the trade name for human food products only in the United States. The Purina brand name is still used to market animal foods in other countries, however. I’m not sure if the animal products manufacturing is still corporately linked to Purina human food products in the U.S. or not – the web site is confusing. “Purina Trout Chow,” however is no longer sold in the U.S. “Aquamax” is the new name. Aquamax is made by: PMI Nutrition International, Inc. POB 19798 Brentwood, MO 63144 314-768-4592 1-800-227-8941 The back of my sacks are LOADED with other formulations for any kind of fish you can imagine. There are sinking pellets for fry and floating sticks for young fish. There are starter and grower formualtions in many variations. The key to getting a formualtion for “trout chow” is a carnivorous diet, which is for cold-water fish that need high protein and nutrient content. The omnivorous diet or “catfish chow” is lower in protein and nutrients and for warmer-water fish. I believe Rick feeds a mix of both carnivorous and omnivorous Aquamax. In what proportions, Rick? The Aquamax 500 pellets are large and so we feed them to adults only. We are having a problem with the Aquamax plugging filters in our indoor aquariums. It also has a very strong smell which is a little strong for indoor use. We are cutting back on it for our indoor aquariums. We may try feeding it only in a separate feeder tub, though. We are a little overloaded with indoor setups at the moment and have been trying to feed in the regular tanks which is causing the filtration problems, obviously. I know Rick has had good results feeding Aquamax in his outside ponds, however. Our turtles love it. We have four male DBTs that won’t eat anything else. They’ll sort through a mixture of several other commercial turtle pellets and eat only the Aquamax! However, I also really like LM Farms Tropical Magic Aquatic Turtle Diet pellets which don’t seem to dirty the water as much and they have a “fruity” smell that we prefer to the Aquamax odor (although most of our turtles like both – but they probably pefer the stronger smelling Aquamax just like cats seem to like the smelliest canned meat!). For juveniles, I am having good success with T-Rex Aquatic Turtle Dry Formula juvenile sized pellets. These also don’t seem to cload the water as much and most of ours really go for it. For hatchlings, we feed a mix of Zoomed hatchling pellets, Baby Reptomin sticks and Vitakraft mixed. irnbru@… wrote:

Okay, now I can tell the feed store exactly what I want him to order for me – “Aquamax Grower 500”. Right now all three of my DBTs like frozen smelt and leave the Reptomin alone. I would like to see if I can get them to eat something that will give them more vitamins. I actually tried a small amount of Purina catfish chow. Bush Gardens in Tampa has machines to buy a handful of pellets to feed the pond turtles. I found out that it is Purina catfish chow. So I brought some home. One of my DBTs ate one pellet but wouldn’t eat any more. Like you say, it must be for warmer water turtles and omnivorous turtles. About the smell, for my fresh water turtles I sometimes give them Wardleys sinking shrimp pellets. It really smells up a room if I forget to put the top back on the container. So, I know what you mean. For indoor use I probably will need a barrel with a lid on it to keep the 50 lb bag in. Thanks again, Bob — In diamondbackterrapins@egroups.com, Todd Stockwell
